Everything you know about the houses is wrong

Starting on August 15th, I will be teaching monthly workshops on anti-capitalism through the houses. If you attended my Subverting Capitalism Through The Houses workshop, this is basically a super-expanded version of that. 

I love talking about the houses. They are probably my favorite subject in astrology. I built the early phases of my client practice through helping people understand and navigate their 4th house. Over the years, I've also developed some gripes with the way we talk about the houses. 

A lot of these gripes have to do with the overall commodification of astrology and the way it has been boiled down to a personality map for many people in the modern era, thanks to the popularity of psychological and Jungian astrology which focuses more on archetypes than on the planets themselves. 

The houses have not been exempt from this treatment, either. While they are often reduced to “areas of the individual life” (and they are indeed that), the houses are so much more than that, and I want to take the individualist lens off of the camera for just a minute. 

The houses are places. Real, physical places, not just mental spaces. I call them “fields of experience,” but sometimes even that falls flat. The houses weren't even referred to as “houses” for many hundreds of years, and according to Robert Hand, Greek astrologers in ancient times NEVER called them “houses." They were called places, or topos. This is where we get terms like “topography” from. 

Capitalism determines not only what is possible within the physical spaces we inhabit, it also shapes and creates and and defines and destroys space. This is why it's so important to me that people who love astrology and hate capitalism don't fall into the same patterns with how we discuss these places in the chart.
